Overview

Clint Hill brings history intimately and vividly to life as he reflects on his seventeen years as a Special Agent in the U.S. Secret Service protecting Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard M. Nixon, and Gerald R. Ford during one of the most tumultuous periods in America’s history.

In Five Presidents, Agent Hill brings us into his world where protection meets politics with stunning behind-the-scenes accounts during a time that encompasses the Cold War; Camelot; the assassinations of John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, and Martin Luther King, Jr.; the Vietnam War; Watergate; and the resignations of Vice President Spiro Agnew and President Richard M. Nixon.

For everyone who didn’t want Mrs. Kennedy and Me to end, Five Presidents is both prequel and sequel—it is the “rest of the story.”

Backstory

Clint Hill vowed he would never write a book about his time in the Secret Service. And then, in 2009, he met journalist Lisa McCubbin while she was writing The Kennedy Detail with former agent Gerald Blaine. Clint began to share his painful memories of the assassination of President Kennedy with Lisa—memories he had never shared with anyone before. Opening up was healing, and Lisa convinced him his memories were important to history. Clint was hesitant—he didn’t think he had enough material for a book. The result was Mrs. Kennedy and Me (2012) which became a #1 New York Times best seller.

In 2013, Hill and McCubbin collaborated again to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President Kennedy with the stunning photo narrative Five Days in November.

During the several years working on these projects together, Clint would recall other memories that included his time with Eisenhower, LBJ, Nixon and Ford. Lisa was fascinated by this rare window into history, and while once again, Clint didn’t think he had enough material for a book, they brought the idea to editor Mitchell Ivers at Gallery Books and he loved it.
