Five Presidents, One Wedding, and a New Baby

Five Presidents

Four months ago today – May 3, 2016 – Clint Hill and I released our third book together:  Five Presidents: My Extraordinary Journey with Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, and Ford. IMG_2393

And what a whirlwind it has been since then! We were on what seemed like a never-ending book tour that began in New York City and (so far) has taken us to Charlottesville, VA; Washington, DC; Dallas, Houston, and Fort Worth, TX; Atlanta, GA; Buffalo and Lewiston, NY (where Clint received an Honorary Doctorate from Niagara University); Dearborn and Petoskey, MI; Naperville and Chicago, IL; St. Louis, MO; San Diego, La Jolla, Corte Madera, and West Hollywood, CA; and Seattle, WA. Whew! We are definitely racking up the frequent flyer miles, and we were thrilled that the book has been so well received—making it to #5 on the New York Times Bestseller List and staying on the list for 10 weeks. IMG_2319

Of all the places Clint has traveled, he had never been to Niagara Falls. So the day before he was to receive his doctorate from Niagara University, we had a few free hours, and I convinced him we needed to take a ride on “Maid of the Mist.”

Throughout our travels it was wonderful to meet so many people who appreciate history and especially love hearing Clint Hill’s stories and having the opportunity to shake his hand.  All along the way we met people who came up to Clint with tears in their eyes, so moved to finally meet the man they first heard about on November 22, 1963– a hero who tried so valiantly to change history.  Especially meaningful to Clint were the countless Secret Service agents who came to our book signings to meet him, and to tell him in person what an inspiration he is to the men and women working tirelessly day in and day out as they face unprecedented challenges protecting our leaders and the candidates for president.

A Wedding

As if releasing a book and embarking on a cross country book tour wasn’t enough excitement, on  June 4, my oldest son, Connor got married to Abby Biernat, in a magical ceremony in Seattle.  It was a beautiful celebration with family and friends joining us from all over the country, with my sister, an ordained minister, officiating. So very special. And now I’m thrilled to have a daughter!

A New Baby

The plan was for Clint and I to take some time off after two years of research, writing, and publicizing Five Presidents. To be perfectly honest, we were exhausted. Well, that’s where the new baby comes in…No, it’s not Connor and Abby’s baby. . . it’s my baby! Ha! Got ya! I’ve agreed to write another book with Gallery Books/Simon and Schuster, with Mitchell Ivers as my editor. Fellow writers understand that a book is truly like a baby… so here I am, expecting my fifth—book baby, that is.  I can’t tell you what it is just yet. I’m still at the stage where I want to keep it a secret, but I’ll reveal it to everyone soon enough. I’m very excited about this new project, though, and I’m learning so much.

So… as we move into the fall, we do have a few more book signings.  Please check our websites for details and follow Clint Hill and me on Facebook and Twitter for updates. Next stops on the tour are Hostfest in Minot, North Dakota; Litquake in San Francisco; and El Dorado, Arkansas.

I enjoyed Mrs Kennedy and me and began reading Five Presidents. I was rnjoying it when, at page 274 I had to come to a complete stop. Oops! A sentence in the penultimate paragraph began “Senator Eugene McCartney, a Democrat from Wisconsin….” Pretty sure you meant Minnesota. While Senator Joseph McCarthy was from Wisconsin, that was way before Johnson’s presidency.
You and Clint do a wonderful job of telling a compelling account of Clint’s many years of duty to the Office of the President and our country.

So happy for Clint and you that the new book has been so well received by so many people including secret service agents. You guys look good in your blog photos.

Lisa: I have SO enjoyed your books with Clint! I have a personal reason for the connection. My parents, Peter and Rachel (Toody) Roland knew Clint and Gwen at Concordia College in the early 50’s. In fact, we would get Christmas greetings from them on the White House stationary. My dad sang with Clint in a men’s quartet at Concordia and were even on the radio! After reading Clint’s story of depression, I am so thankful that these books were written and you are responsible for that.
I know you don’t know me, but if it is possible I would love to meet Clint someday and talk about his time with my parents and his incredible life. My parents have passed away (Dad in 2001 at 69 and Mom in 2009 at 79). With his background, I didn’t know if I could reach him. You have my permission to send this to him.
I thank you for your time and again, thanks you for the wonderful books!!

    Dear Lisa:
I wanted to let you know that I have read all 4 books and they are all page turners.I was in the crowd at the JFK MUSEUM when Clint spoke on the book Mrs Kennedy and ME.Thank you for these books.I understand that part of my life so much more now then I did before. Actually, in this instance, in which the phrase is used at the beginning of a sentence, “Clint Hill and I” is correct. It is appropriate to use “and me” instead of “and I” when the phrase is at the end of a sentence as in: “Thanks for joining Clint Hill and me!” Hope this is helpful!

Love the books. All of them. Thank you for bringing his story to us so he can be appreciated as the hero that he is. I am glad he looks happy in the photos I see of him. His life has been truly amazing and I am glad I found these books, thanks to Mike Rowe on Facebook for bringing it to our attention.

Thank you, Lisa Mccubbin, for your gift of being there for Clint Hill so he could very courageously open up re 11/22/63. Brian Lambs’s interview of Mr. Hill popped up on you tube yesterday and it’s my first “encounter” with Mr. Hill. Then I looked at the films of 11/22/63 and how he ever made it to the car and get up on it while it was speeding up…! yes, well trained and also a lot of heart. If you would kindly pass on to him “Happy Birthday” (is it 90th?) and to you too and also to thank him for all his service including in the Army which could be another story, if he could reveal it. Such a humble person. Thank you again
